Sunshine

“Perfect cleanliness, plenty of sunlight, careful attention to sanitation in every detail of the home life, are essential to freedom from disease and to the cheerfulness and vigor of the inmates of the home.” Ministry of Healing, p. 276.
Sunshine benefits the body in many ways. It furnishes natural Vitamin D and helps to lower cholesterol. The vitamin D produced through the process of the sun aids calcium assimilation in the body. Sunlight has a stimulating effect on the immune system, as it increases the oxygen supply to the skin and like exercise, works to speed up the metabolism. Sunlight also stimulates the liver, increasing its ability to deal with toxins, and therefore help ease the burden of the immune system. To get the full benefits of sunlight, start with 10-15 minutes exposure to the face and hands daily, working up to 30-45 minutes. The body stores the vitamin D readily for over a week. The best time to sunbathe is between the hours of 9 to 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Avoid burning from being overexposed to sunshine. Avoid the risk of skin cancer by reducing intake of oils, margarine and similar types of free fat.
